What Is an OCT Scan and Why Is It Important for My Eye Health?

During your eye exam at Miamisburg Vision Care, you may have heard your eye doctor mention OCT — Optical Coherence Tomography. But what exactly is it, and why does it matter?

What Is an OCT Scan?

OCT is a non-invasive imaging technique that uses light waves to create detailed, cross-sectional images of the retina. It measures and maps the layers of the retina with remarkable precision, allowing your eye doctor to detect very subtle changes in the eye’s structure — often before any symptoms are noticeable.

Why Would Your Eye Doctor Recommend an OCT?

Your eye doctor may recommend an OCT scan to:

  • Monitor the progression of an existing condition such as macular degeneration or diabetic retinopathy
  • Evaluate how well a treatment for an existing condition is working
  • Screen for conditions such as glaucoma or retinal detachment
  • Detect early signs of eye disease in high-risk patients, including those with a family history of eye disease, people with diabetes, or those who have had previous eye surgery

Is the Test Painful?

No. An OCT scan is completely painless and non-invasive. It takes only a few minutes and requires no contact with the eye. You simply rest your chin on a support while the device scans the eye.
