Why Are Dilated Eye Exams So Important?
Having your eyes dilated during a comprehensive eye exam may seem like a nuisance, but the benefits far outweigh the temporary discomfort of blurred vision and light sensitivity that follow.
What Is a Dilated Eye Exam?
During an eye exam, your optometrist uses special eye drops in each eye to widen (dilate) your pupils. This allows a much more thorough examination of the back of the eye, including the retina, optic nerve, blood vessels, and macula.
What Can a Dilated Exam Detect?
Dilation makes it easier to detect conditions that may not show early symptoms, including:
- Cataracts
- Glaucoma
- Diabetic retinopathy
- Macular degeneration
- Retinal tumors
- Retinal detachment or tears
- Eye floaters
Many of these conditions can develop without any noticeable symptoms, which is why dilated exams are so critical for early detection.
What to Expect
After your eye doctor applies the dilating drops, it takes about 10–20 minutes for your eyes to fully dilate. Your eyes will remain dilated for 4–6 hours. During this time, you may experience light sensitivity, difficulty reading, and blurry near vision. Wearing sunglasses after your appointment is helpful.
