January is Glaucoma Awareness Month

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases affecting the optic nerve that can lead to the loss of peripheral vision. It is the second leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. According to the American Optometric Association, an estimated 112 million people around the world are expected to have the condition by 2040.

Why Early Detection Matters

Over three million Americans currently live with glaucoma — and roughly half don’t know they have it. This is why January, Glaucoma Awareness Month, is an important reminder to get your eyes checked.

  • Glaucoma is often called the “silent thief of sight” because vision loss occurs gradually and without pain
  • African Americans are 6–8 times more likely to develop glaucoma than Caucasians
  • People over 60, those with a family history, and individuals with diabetes are at greater risk

What You Can Do

There are often no symptoms until significant vision loss has already occurred, which is why annual eye exams are the key to early detection and management. Treatment options — including eye drops, medications, laser therapy, and surgery — can slow or halt the disease’s progression when caught early.
