Hormones and Eye Health
Women of child-bearing age commonly experience changes in vision due to birth control pills or pregnancy. Hormonal changes during pregnancy can cause dry, irritated, or watery eyes, as well as temporary difficulty wearing contact lenses. It is generally recommended that pregnant women wait until after their baby is born to update their eyeglass prescription — unless they have certain medical conditions like diabetes or experience unusual vision changes.
Hormones and Aging
As we age, hormones play a significant role in diminishing eyesight. Peri-menopausal and menopausal women often report vision changes as a result of decreased estrogen levels. Women who have had hysterectomies may also experience vision changes until hormones stabilize.
When to See Your Eye Doctor
Changes in hormone levels are typically normal and not a cause for alarm. However, if you experience unusual or sudden vision changes at any stage of life, a comprehensive eye exam is a good idea. Your eye doctor can check for signs of underlying conditions such as diabetes that may be contributing to the changes.
