Concerned About Macular Degeneration? Here Are 6 Tips to Lower Your Risk

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a deterioration of the macula — the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision. It is the leading cause of vision loss in adults over 60. Here are six ways to reduce your risk.

1. Stop Smoking

Smokers are up to four times more likely to develop AMD and typically develop the disease around 10 years earlier than non-smokers. Quitting is the single most impactful step you can take.

2. Wear Quality Sunglasses

UV rays from sunlight can accelerate AMD. Choose sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection. Polarized lenses are especially helpful for outdoor activities near water, snow, or reflective surfaces.

3. Check Your Blood Pressure

High blood pressure restricts oxygenated blood flow to the eyes. Monitor your blood pressure regularly and work with your doctor to keep it within a healthy range.

4. Eat Healthy and Consider Supplements

Reduce saturated fat and increase your intake of dark leafy greens, oily fish, and foods rich in lutein and zeaxanthin. If you have dry AMD, ask your optometrist about antioxidant supplements that may slow its progression.

5. Know Your Family History

Up to 70% of AMD cases have a genetic component. If a parent or sibling has been diagnosed, get more frequent eye exams.

6. Get Regular Eye Exams

AMD often develops without early symptoms. Regular eye exams are the only reliable way to detect it early enough to slow its progression. To schedule your exam, contact Miamisburg Vision Care in Miamisburg today.
