Back-To-School: Why Eye Exams Are More Important Than Ever

As back-to-school season approaches, eye exams should be on every parent’s checklist. Undetected vision problems can significantly hinder a child’s ability to learn, focus, and thrive in the classroom.

Why School Vision Screenings Aren’t Enough

School screenings only check for basic visual acuity. They cannot assess eye teaming, tracking, focusing, depth perception, or detect eye diseases. Only a comprehensive exam by a qualified optometrist can do all of that.

The Impact of Screen Time

The shift to more digital learning has significantly increased children’s screen time, which can contribute to digital eye strain and accelerate myopia progression. Symptoms include blurred vision, eye fatigue, headaches, dry eyes, and neck or shoulder pain.

Studies have found that children who spend time outdoors — especially in sunlight — experience slower myopia progression. Encourage at least an hour of outdoor activity daily.

When Should Children Have Eye Exams?

  • First exam: 6–12 months of age
  • Again at age 3, then before starting kindergarten
  • Annually thereafter, or as recommended by your eye doctor
