Are Contact Lenses Safe For Young Children?

One question we often hear at our practice is: ‘Is my child too young for contact lenses?’ This is an important question, and the answer may surprise you.

For children with myopia (nearsightedness), contact lenses can be a convenient method of vision correction. They allow kids to participate in sports and physical activities without worrying about breaking or losing their glasses.

Some children may ask for contacts because they feel self-conscious wearing glasses. Contact lenses can provide a boost of confidence. Single-use daily disposable soft contacts are very popular for children, since there is no cleaning or maintenance involved.

What Does the Research Say?

A study published in The Journal of Ophthalmic & Physiological Optics found that children are not at higher risk of experiencing contact lens complications than adults. The study followed nearly 1,000 children aged 8–16 over 1.5–3 years. Results showed the risk of developing infections or adverse reactions was less than 1% per year — comparable to contact lens wearers of other ages.

Is My Child Ready?

Readiness depends on the child’s level of maturity, personal hygiene, and motivation. Many children are highly motivated to wear contacts and display real responsibility in caring for their lenses. Parents may need to play an active role initially as their child learns how to insert and remove lenses.

Contact lenses are not entirely risk-free for anyone, but when worn and cared for according to your eye doctor’s instructions, they are safe for children and teenagers.
