5 Eye Symptoms You Should Never Ignore

It can be hard to know when an eye symptom is serious. Waiting too long can sometimes lead to permanent damage. Here are five eye symptoms that should prompt a prompt visit to your optometrist.

1. Eye Pain

No amount of eye pain is normal in healthy eyes. Ocular pain (on the eye surface) may indicate infection, trauma, or a foreign object. Orbital pain (deeper inside the eye) — described as stabbing, throbbing, or aching — warrants immediate evaluation, especially if accompanied by vision changes.

2. Double Vision

Diplopia, or seeing double, can range in cause from needing an updated prescription to more serious conditions including stroke. Always have sudden or new double vision evaluated promptly.

3. Sudden Floaters or Flashes

Occasional floaters are common and harmless. However, a sudden significant increase in floaters, especially when accompanied by flashes of light, can be an early sign of retinal detachment — a sight-threatening emergency requiring immediate care.

4. Redness and Swelling

While mild redness from allergies or a late night is common, redness with swelling, pain, or discharge may indicate an eye infection or corneal abrasion that needs treatment.

5. Blurred Vision

Blurred vision can indicate something as simple as a changed prescription, or something more serious like cataracts or a retinal problem. Never dismiss sudden or worsening blurry vision.
